Christmas in November

November 21, 2011

I’m starting to become a rabble-rouser.

Who am I kidding? I’ve always been. And what I’m particularly peeved about this time is—you guessed it—Christmas in November.

Each year, it gets worse. Halloween passes and we see Christmas wreaths adorning the entrances to grocery stores. Music about snow and presents and drummer boys abounds in almost every single public space we enter. People begin to string the lights before they’ve even bought a Thanksgiving turkey.

Stop the madness! Christmas is a special holiday for anyone who celebrates, and it loses its meaning when it becomes a two-month affair of overplayed music, fake Santas, and an emphasis (as usual) on shopping as the key to happiness and fulfillment. Don’t even get me started on our materialist culture….

If you’re as annoyed as I am, sign the petition I started over at Care2, The Petition Site. Let’s tell the retail industry that they are ruining the Christmas season for us rational folks, and we will not buy Christmas items until after Thanksgiving.

I know there are bigger fish to fry in this world, but this is the fish that swam a little too forcefully into my net.

(Oh, and spread the word! Email, tweet, or recommend this petition on Facebook.)

I agree! Did you see Nordstrom’s poster about this?

Check it: http://tonightsforecastdark.blogspot.com/2011/11/nordstrom-takes-stand-against-early.html

I didn’t until you gave me this link. Thanks! I think they’re trying the opposite tactic, hoping to get people to shop by playing into their sensibilities. Regardless, I like it. I hope other stores will follow suit.
