SuperWoman is going incognito today at the BlogHer Writers’ Conference. Humidity has abated, the fairies have listened to her cries, and she is off to strut around New York City amid the rushing morning crowds. No one even knows she has bright blue spandex on under her jeans, or that her comfortable clogs are also mini-motorboats which, in the blink of an eye, carry her atop the sea should she have to rescue a shrieking dolphin. (SuperWoman is much in tune with nature and its perils.)
New York is interesting, she observes. The women have very thin legs which they wrap in tight black cotton. She resents that they’ve all ransacked the trendy stores for knee-high leather boots. (A few superwomen in Amaza’s lair are whining about the shortage.) On every sidewalk, people plow forward, like ants, on their way to some place important (Starbucks). Men in suits, women in ties, old guys who look like their Beagles are all needling their way through the crowds and the smells of hot dogs and bus smoke and horse shit. It’s a beautiful day! SuperWoman used to fear this place. Now, she feels invigorated by it.
She supposes it’s because a conference full of women writers makes her happy. It reminds her of the good old days at Womentopia, the university where she learned about many things, including how to make lip gloss a terrifying weapon. Today, she is free from diaper bags and lunch preparation, even student papers at that weird job where she pretends to be a teacher. It is in these moments of harmony with the city that she feels like her old SuperWoman self.
And no one can deny the positive energy of the BlogHer conferences, where women from across the country convene and figure out a strategy to take over the world….
