–For William Carlos Williams. (But mostly for moms.)
So much depends
upon
a red sofa
glazed with maple
syrup
beside the white
paper
scribbled in blue.
So much depends
upon
the kitchen floor
speckled
with cracker droppings
alongside
the muddy shoes.
Or.
Nothing depends
upon
the small boy’s
pee
vibrant in the toilet,
a haphazard gift
for his mom.
And.
He just wants to say,
sorry
to have uttered
the phrase,
“JESUS CHRIST!”
in Macy’s
last week
and which probably
embarrassed his mother
as he chased Madeleine
toward the handbags.
He is so sweet
and so bold.
And certainly couldn’t
have heard that
from home.

He he, I think Williams would’ve been proud of your mad skills and your son’s choice words. After all, aren’t poets supposed to embrace the freedom of expression?

I love it! You are a creative genius!
When I think of your home I always think of the red sofa. It is a cozy place for drinking tea and catching up, coloring with your son who invites me in even though for all intents and purposes I am a stranger. It holds the laughter of our book club, halloween parties and so much more. Apparently it absorbs maple syrup and kid stuff just as well as it absorbed red wine. I love your red sofa!

Love it! Thanks for the laugh. Let’s just say, I’m empathetic … and our sofas could be twins.
