That’s What I Say

August 13, 2011

I have three words to describe The Beatles.

Boring.

Flaccid.

Did I mention boring?

I know that technically, this is a matter of taste, but personally, I have to pronounce the Rolling Stones as the clear first choice when it comes to dynamic, immortal rock bands of the 1960′s. In Casa de Jana, there is no contest. When The Beatles come on our Pandora station—and they inevitably do, no matter what station we pick—the husband and I rush to press the thumbs-down sign. What are they, the google of music? The Rolling Stones are just so much more interesting. And cool.

Listen to one chord of the Stones’ guitars, one biting line from their lyrics, and you can hear more grit and virility than The Beatles’ entire insectile repertoire.

Just watch Mick Jagger move.

And of course, I have to admit that this song speaks to me deeply. (Except for the part about making some girl.)

Who’s your pick?

Weeelll, that’s tough. I live with a music junkie. I will tell you, however, that my 2-year-old’s favorite song is “Brown Sugar.” And she can sing it!!

I love The Rolling Stones. Seriously, THAT is music! But I also love The Beatles. Most of my Beatles favorites tend to be the less-played songs, though. My cousin is an actress, and when I was younger I watched her perform a one-woman show called “Why is John Lennon Wearing a Skirt?” I think a lot of my Beatles-love stems from that.

The Stones, man! I had to giggle at Jagger’s moves, because Mama used to wander by and they’d be on video/tv and she’d look at Mick’s tight pants, then look at his crotch, and she’d always say, “I know he stuffs a sock in there.”

I am a Beatles fan, but like the Stones too. Both bands bring out different emotions in me.
I think that no modern day band comes close to their respective greatness.
