I have this neighbor who is really good at all things domestic. She’s not bitchy or judgmental. (Witch.) Her house practically sparkles. (Hmph!) She is animated and creative with children, and she always seems to be freshly showered and dressed. Even the backseat of her car is clean.
I suspect when her son says, “Mommy, play with me,” she doesn’t shush him away so she can finish her blog post. In fact, she doesn’t have a blog, further proof that she is utterly selfless.
I find myself thinking, “I don’t know how she does it.”
And then I think, “Isn’t there a book by that title?”
Why, yes. Yes there is, by Allison Pearson, circa 2002. And since I’m aware that despite our 21st century existence, many people still believe women “like”—were, in fact, made for—wiping poop from small plump asses and mopping the kitchen floor and doing the thirteenth load of laundry in a week—simply by virtue of possessing a vagina (which, I will say again, is a wicked miracle of an organ), then I think it’s quite appropriate that the next Maladjusted Book Club selection is a humorous book about the nature of juggling motherhood and work in this post-feminist, feminist-backlash of an era. Don’t you think?
Besides, I know many of you have been mumbling, “Come on with the deep books. Can’t we read something fun? I’d join your club if you weren’t such a party-pooper with the 19th century French literature and that long and drawn out symposium crap.”
Well this “Mommy-Lit” (because surely anything John Updike wrote was labeled “Daddy-Lit”) is about as light as I get, people. There will be no Jennifer Weiner here. Deal with it. And, SURPRISE! I haven’t read but a few pages of this one, so I’ll be just as shocked and appalled by the things the narrator, Kate Reddy, Working Mother, does to show that she can manage it all: work, home, sex, play, cooking, pretend-cooking, cat-napping after midnight, and, I assume, occasional showering.
I think we will have a fabulous discussion. Don’t you?
Set your calendars for Monday, March 14th.
Tell me you’re in. (You can lie if you have to. I think Kate Reddy would like that.)

Bummer! I’ve already read this one. I will say no more for fear of ruining it.

Will you still join the discussion?
I have read that one and really enjoyed it – great choice! I’m in and I’ll see how much I remember.

Ok so I’ve claimed I’d participate twice now but I suck! This time I ordered the book before I committed so I’m in for reals this time!
Alright! I’ll be looking for you on that day. Might have to hunt you down. :)
Just reserved my copy at the library! I’m in!
I’m in. Promise to enjoy this one! If it wasn’t for your book club, I might not ever finish a book!

I read this book back in 2004 when I was in London…childless. It meant nothing back then but now I totally, totally get it.
I LOVED this book!

OK this is my kind of book, and this time I will read it AND participate (now I just need to get my hands on a copy!!)
New job, fairly new baby, and new book for book club? I simply don’t know how you do it!
I don’t have kids but I’m in!

You don’t need to have kids to be in the book club! Or read the blog, for that matter.
By the way, I saw that it’s being made into a movie with Sara Jessica Parker as Kate.
I saw that, too. More reason to read the book, right?
The backseat of her car is clean? She is an alien.
I really, really want to join the book club. I am going to try!

Wait – there’s a book about me and I didn’t know about it? Haha. I kid. I kid. Being a working mom myself, I must say I’m intrigued.
Count me in. March 14 – it’s a date!

I have listen to the Audio of this book while errr dare I say it, community service. Great book. I’m in for a second dose. Its that good!
Don’t feel bad. Madam Bovary sucked the life for French Lit right out of our book club too. As a father who plays the part of Mr. Mom a good percentage of the time [all in an effort to keep her energy level up come bedtime:) ] I think this book may have some redeeming qualities to it. I may very well read along this month.
We could use some male energy around here! Would love to hear your comments on being a working parent, Scott!
I haven’t read this book and am looking forward to it. Thanks Jana. This is a great way to connect and have a meaningful dialogue.
I’d love to be in on this discussion but can’t because I don’t have time to read (or do much else right now). Can’t wait to read the comments.
Good thing I’m not your neighbor or I might have thought you were talking about me ;) Placed a copy on hold at my local library today. Can’t wait for the discussion. By the way, I like your deep book selections.
I’ve seen this one floating around but never read it. I’ll try to join in!

I’ve read this twice, once before I had kids and once after. I can’t wait to see what you have to say about it.

There are really no time restraints. Whenever you come, we’ll have you. Happily.
I think I’m in. Especially if you remind me. I read this book years ago, and while I recall that I enjoyed it, I don’t remember much of it and will be interested to re-read (can’t remember how old my little hags were when I read it initially) this.
;-)
Sorry I haven’t been by in soooo long. Juggling and learning the new blog space, and thanks for your email, by the way, which totally brightened my day. Even though I forgot to reply (I think) and you now think I’m a total bitch.

No, no bitchiness assumed. Hope you can read along!
I heard Allison Pearson on Fresh Air last week promoting her new book, but what I took away was, “I really want to read that other one she wrote about how impossible motherhood is.” If I can get my hands on a copy in time, I’m in.

I heard she was going to be on Fresh Air and wanted to listen, but wasn’t able to that day. So yes, join in! I think this book is right up your alley. (What little I know of your alley.)
I just found your site but I’d love to join the book club. LOVE TO. I have not been able to join a successful IRL book club in the last six years. Maybe I will have more success online!
*off to grab the book so i know what you all are talking about*
Love the commentary on your neighbor!
